Winter Training

I feel this time of year, winter, can be hard to stay focused on running. We usually don’t have any “upcoming” races, holidays are everywhere, and motivation can be minimal. How do you stay or keep in shape so when spring comes you are ready to start training again to get that goal you want this next race. I think the following items help keep that motivation!

Winter may be a great time to implement a variety of cardio and weight training. I have previously given my take on the importance of incorporating weight training into your training program. Now may be the perfect time to add in a different type of cardio workout. Whether it is adding a bike ride or elliptical machine workout, these different cardio workouts will help to keep your cardiovascular fitness up adding a little variety to your routine.

The weather can create a challenge for us when it becomes very cold, windy, and snowing. Some of us may choose to do a membership to a club or gym while others may utilize the treadmill to assist getting mileage in for the day, week, or month. Look for the variety that you can add to your treadmill runs, this can be adding in hills, intervals, or incorporating the treadmill as a station in a circuit workout.

Other ideas for this winter that can help keep you focused might also include finally adding in the weightlifting component to your training or maybe finding a group run to participate in. If starting to lift weights make sure to seek assistance for proper technique if you have never lifted. You don’t want to get an injury in the off season. Look for your local running group to join once or twice an evening for a run. Joining a group to help tolerate the weather elements can make the evening run more enjoyable!

My last suggestion to help the winter running to find your next race! There is nothing that will drive your motivation more than the upcoming race. It might be a 5K or a marathon; having goal can help keep us motivated. There are great races in the warmer climates during the winter, and it will give you an opportunity to experience some warmth this winter!

Be safe and warm this winter! If you are looking or find that winter race, let me know if I can help you achieve the finish line!
